My Journey, Your Inspiration.
Personalizing the experience
Like many of you, my childhood was defined by the thrill of sports. Summer baseball games, the rush of the track, the camaraderie of the soccer field – these weren't just activities; they were the moments where friendships were forged, family bonds strengthened, and a lifelong passion for movement ignited. We all have those memories, those moments where sports were more than just a game. By no means was I a five star athlete, but I thoroughly enjoyed competition amongst friends and competitors alike.
Then, at 15, life threw a curveball: a diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Fear and uncertainty clouded my world. But even in the midst of tears and confusion, a lifeline emerged. I remember returning to basketball practice, my emotions raw, and sharing my diagnosis with the varsity coach. His response? "I have T1D too." At that moment, a wave of calm washed over me. I wasn't alone.
Fast forward to adulthood, and exercise became my sanctuary. The gym was more than just a place to work out; it was an outlet. A safe space to process life's frustrations, to channel pent-up energy, and to remind myself that I was stronger than any challenge. It was me versus me, every rep a victory, every set a release.
AT the age of 49, I decided to take it a step further and entered the world of competitive bodybuilding. It wasn't just about the physique; it was about proving to myself, and to others, that T1D wouldn't define my limits. It was also about proving that age is truly just a number. With my Dexcom CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) proudly displayed and a spray tan covering my hard-earned muscles, I stepped on stage. My goal was simple: to show the world that "diabetics look like me" and that with dedication, anything is possible. And yes, all the hard work paid off.
Father Time may be undefeated, but that doesn't mean we should surrender to his ticking clock. Whether you're younger, my age, or older, your potential is limitless. You don't have to lay down and quit. You can always achieve more.
My journey, however, has always been about more than just personal achievement. I get tremendous joy out of helping others and thrive on encouraging people to keep a positive mindset. From becoming the “Big brother” to my foster brothers, to serving my community as a civil servant for two decades plus, I've learned that true fulfillment comes from helping others. Witnessing someone achieve their goals, overcome obstacles, and live a healthier, happier life – that's what truly drives me.
